About the Leyba Family

Who we are, where we come from, and what holds us together.

Our Roots

The Leyba family has deep roots in the American Southwest, with ties to both New Mexico and Texas that stretch back generations. Ours is a family shaped by the land — by the high desert plains, the Pecos River valley, and the tight-knit communities that grew up along the borderlands of the American Southwest.

The Leyba surname is of Spanish origin, a variant of Leyva, itself derived from a place name in Spain. It is one of the older Hispanic surnames found in New Mexico, carried into the region during the Spanish colonial era and passed down through the generations by families who put down permanent roots in the Southwest. Today it remains a name closely associated with New Mexico’s Hispanic community and heritage.

“A family rooted in the Southwest — shaped by hard land, harder work, and an unshakeable bond with one another.”

The Artesia, New Mexico area, situated in Eddy County in the southeastern part of the state, has long been home to the Leyba family. Artesia is a community built on agriculture, oil, and the resilience of its people — values that run deep in our family as well. Families like ours have been part of the fabric of that region for generations, contributing to the community, the land, and to one another.

Our Grandparents

At the heart of our family are Eusebio Leyba and Esmerelda Leyba, who made their home in Artesia, New Mexico. They are the foundation upon which this family is built — the ones whose love, sacrifice, and example set the tone for every generation that followed.

Like so many families from this part of the Southwest, theirs was a life defined by hard work, faith, and devotion to family. The values they lived and modeled — showing up for one another, working with your hands, and keeping family first — are the same values that define the Leybas today.

Who We Are

The Leyba family is, above all else, close-knit. Distance, time, and circumstance may scatter us across New Mexico, Texas, and beyond — but family stays family. We show up for weddings and funerals, for holidays and hard times, for the moments that matter and the ordinary ones in between.

We are a hard-working family. That is not a boast — it is simply who we have always been. It is something we inherited from the generations before us, people who built lives in demanding country without complaint, and who taught us by example that effort and integrity are worth more than ease.

This website is a place for all of us to stay connected, share memories, and make sure the next generation knows where they come from. If you’re a Leyba — or married into one — this is your home too. Explore the site, find your page, and if something is missing, reach out and we’ll get it added.
